What's Going on Here?

This site was originally created in 2009 to be a simple prototype Drupal site for a client proposal. It only had one active Lorem ipsum page and an event node on it. Afterwards, I thought I'd taken the site down, but I never got actually got around to that. It was still live, using default settings that allowed visitors to create their own accounts without admin approval, which gave them permission to leave comments.

Recently I noticed tremendous activity on one of my servers, and it turned out to be due to comment spammers leaving gobs of spam on the two active nodes of this forgotten site.

After nearly four years there were over 114K comments left by 31K+ registered users, all of whom were only spamming useless garbage on two useless nodes of a useless site.

When this was discovered, my first reaction was to take down the site. But then I had a better idea...

Leave the site up, remove the original content, the old spammer accounts and spam comments, and just let the spammers keep coming back, but this time lay out a bunch of spam traps all over the place to catch them and get them reported to the Project Honeypot database, so that other sites might be able to avoid their useless trash.

Within mere seconds of setting up a honeypot, using http:BL, the site was catching all these spammers trying to get back into their deleted user accounts to leave more spam, but all they can do now is report themselves, as the useless spamming trash that they are. Many were blacklisted immediately, and many more, greylisted.

Because they're either totally robotic spam spiders or humans who can't read English, they keep trying to coming back, and those that have not yet reach the threshold for banning just keep reporting themselves until they eventually will be grey or blacklisted.

The sidebars on the right show the most recently caught offenders. And they just keep coming. They're idiots.
